DESCRIPTION:There is a mental health crisis in schools across the United States. Since March 2020\, teachers\, school staff\, families\, and students have tried to balance physical safety\, emotional well-being\, and learning while navigating crises and trauma from the global COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers are reporting symptoms of depression at nearly 3 times the rate of other adults in the US (Steiner & Woo\, 2020)\, and children are visiting the emergency room more frequently for their mental health issues. The trauma and harm caused in the past two years will not be solved by the pandemic going away. What needs to change? \nIn this webinar\, teachers and students will reflect on their challenges\, unmet needs\, and mental health during COVID-19. Mental health and social-emotional learning experts will examine how to integrate wellness into school and district culture to support students and teachers\, with the goal to reimagine the future of mental health after COVID. SUMMARY:A Conversation with Students: Reimagining Education
DESCRIPTION:Education “as usual” needs to change. The COVID-19 pandemic and heightened social injustices have illuminated longstanding opportunity gaps in schools. What does a system that meets the needs of all of our students look and feel like? \nMAEC’s Reflecting\, Reimagining\, and Reforming Education series brings together students\, teachers\, families\, administrators\, and content experts to answer that question. Join us as we tackle topics from mental health and culturally responsive family engagement to data practices and shifting relationships with technology. \nPART I: STUDENT VOICE \nCOVID-19 has shaken up the American educational landscape\, with unprecedented school closures and a national experiment with remote learning. In April 2020\, the Center for Education Equity (CEE) spoke with young people across the country to learn about the ways the pandemic affected their lives and their education. As many students now return to in-person learning\, we want to hear how their experiences during the past year and a half have shaped their vision of what school could look like. SUMMARY:Looking Back to Move Forward: Unpacking Our Own Racial Socialization
DESCRIPTION:As adults in the lives of children\, we play vital roles in shaping how and what they learn about race. Whether we identify as White or BIPOC people\, an important starting point is to look honestly at how we\, ourselves\, were socialized around race as children. \nWhat did we learn about being “White\,” “Asian American\,” “Latino\,” “Mixed-race\,” and other identities – whether as personal identity or other-identity? At home or school\, how did we learn to account for racial segregation and racial inequality? What did we learn about race that we then had to try to unlearn? What remains to be unlearned? \nThese are weighty issues. We’ll be joined by three people\, with different racial identities and socialization histories\, who will reflect on the race work they’ve done and what they’ve learned. And\, as always\, we also look forward to hearing from you.

DESCRIPTION:As anti-trans laws clash with Pride month\, trans and non-binary students need advocates at school now more than ever. DESCRIPTION:Join the National Center for Families Learning in a special supportive webinar for parents and caretakers. We’ll talk about advocating for educational programming and resources to address family needs. \nAcross the country\, schools are receiving a very large one-time increase in federal funding to address problems revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. School districts and schools have a unique opportunity to access additional resources to support family-led and family-supported programs. However\, they must have meaningful feedback from families about their needs. \nDuring this session\, parents and caretakers will hear from educational leaders and look at specific ways to communicate with state and district officials to advocate for funding programs in their communities. \nEspañol\nÚnase a National Center for Families Learning para un webinar (foro) de apoyo especial para padres y cuidadores.
